Woman Wonder: Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova:

First woman to go into space. In 1963 she went SOLO in the spaceship, Vostok 6 (pictured below)!!  She spent almost 3 days, logging more than 70 hours in space and made 48 orbits of Earth. Her flight was part of a dual mission with cosmonaut Valeriy Bykovsky who launched two days before Teresheshkova in his craft, Vostok 5. The two spacecrafts had different flight plans, however, at one point they came with 3 miles of each other.
During her flight Tereshkova noticed a problem in the spaceships navigation program and saved her historical flight from tragedy.
Tereshkov came from a small village collective farm and left school at 16 to work in a textile factory but inspired by the cousmonaut Yuri Gagarin she volunteered for the Soviet space program.  She and four other women were given 18 months training along with a battery of tests after which Tereshkova was chosen for the mission.
