April, National Poetry Month ...

Feel free to download and print out this calendar for your personal use this month.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”
Mary Oliver

On April 5, 2005 the Empire State Building was illuminated with blue lights to mark the 10th anniversary of National Poetry Month.[4]

In 2006, the Academy of American Poets launched Poem-a-Day, publishing one new poem on its website Poets.org each day during the month-long celebration. Poem-a-Day is now a daily, year-long series, which has been syndicated by King Features.[5]

In 2012, the Academy of American Poets launched the Dear Poet project, which invites students to read and write poems during National Poetry Month, some of which are published on Poets.org. The project is accompanied by a lesson plan offered to K-12 teachers for free.[6]

Each year, a special poster is commissioned by the Academy of American Poets for National Poetry Month, with almost 150,000 copies distributed to schools, libraries, and community centers for free. In the past, posters have been designed by noted graphic designers such as Chip Kidd and Milton Glaser. The 2015 National Poetry Month poster has been designed by New Yorkerillustrator Roz Chast.[7]

In a proclamation issued on April 1, 1996, President Bill Clinton declared: "National Poetry Month offers us a welcome opportunity to celebrate not only the unsurpassed body of literature produced by our poets in the past, but also the vitality and diversity of voices reflected in the works of today's American poetry….Their creativity and wealth of language enrich our culture and inspire a new generation of Americans to learn the power of reading and writing at its best."[8] In addition, similar official National Poetry Month proclamation have been issued by mayors from towns and cities across the country, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tucson, and Washington, D.C.[9]

Mapping your one precious life ....

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”

Since the beginning of this new year, this beautiful query from Mary Oliver has been echoing in my head. Which makes sense as a new year emphasizes the passing of time.  As I sit inside my blessed cozy home with arctic winds cycloning outside, I am keenly aware of how precious life is and once again question my purpose and reason of my life.  This inquiry lead me to creating a vision map for 2018 and I thought I'd suggest this idea to you.

This exercise may be called a mind map, a vision board or a number of other names, however the idea is the same - to think about and to map-out your goals. The time period of the exercise can vary, be it your goals for this month, this year or your life.  There are so many ways and instructions for a vision map on the web that I suggest that you google the idea and see which description excites you.  I am drawn to a more visual kind of exercise and map,  using many markers and colors. But no matter which route you take the aim is the same, to clarify and focus on what you want to do/achieve/manifest/learn/finish (you get the picture) during the next year.

Below is a random example of a vision map I pulled from the internet as well as a possible template to start you off.

 Happy mapping!! love, mom

for the Autumnal Equinox

'two worlds ...' @2015 #fromthelandofdragons

Lines Written in the Days of Growing Darkness

Every year we have been
witness to it: how the
world descends

into a rich mash, in order that
it may resume.
And therefore
who would cry out

to the petals on the ground
to stay,
knowing as we must,
how the vivacity of what was is married

to the vitality of what will be?
I don’t say
it’s easy, but
what else will do

if the love one claims to have for the world
be true?

So let us go on, cheerfully enough,
this and every crisping day,

though the sun be swinging east,
and the ponds be cold and black,
and the sweets of the year be doomed.

– Mary Oliver

how do you pray???

© virginiafitzgerald.com

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

May this dress remind us that we alone are responsible for our life!!!

“You must not ever stop being whimsical.
And you must not, ever, give anyone else
the responsibility for your life.” ~ Mary Oliver

I post this reminder especially for my dear Maya who turned 18 yesterday,
and is graduating from high school next week!!
Remember my sweet you alone are responsible for your life'
your well-being, your happiness, your passion, your fears!
NEVER give that power to another!!
and NEVER lose your wonder, love and whimsy!!!
love you more!!!!

may this dress bring you heart . . .

The Journey
by Mary Oliver
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice-
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do-
determined to save
the only life you could save.

may this dress remind us all of the soft animal of our bodies . . .

'moss . . .' (2dec2013) part of my decemberdress series

“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves."

mary oliver

today while scruffy & i took our morning constitutional we came upon two geese just chatting it up.  i have always loved that distinctive sound that geese make, but now, thanks to the most amazing Mary Oliver, this unique call brings to mind so much more with this wonderful poem . . .

“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”

May this dress remind you to pay attention . . .

PRAYING by Mary Oliver

It doesn't have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.

~from Mary Oliver's collection of poetry, "Thirst" (Beacon Press, 2006).

thank you Oriah Mountain Dreamer for sharing this inspiring poem today,
and thank you Mary Oliver for your exquisite way with words!!
we are so blessed!!

may this dress remind you to be amazed and astonished with living!!! xx

“Instructions for living a life.
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”

Today's dresstag photo comes from  Guangzhou, China!!!!
thanks to the wonderful and so talented Clara Bohrer.
She offered to take a few dresstags with her to China
and last night I got this photo!!
As I read her email
I was bathed in a sense of amazement and wonder!!
Besides the thought of my dresstags on foreign shores,
I was bathed by the wonders of life!!

"The dress on the photo was left at a market in GZ, with the delicious dragon fruits. I left there and some 10 minutes later, when we walked back to that area, the dress was already gone and a young woman, that I think works there, was looking at us with a very big and friendly smile!!!!"

These past days I have been struck by
how the universe provides,
sometimes you are aware and
sometimes it takes awhile for awareness to sink in.
I am amazed on how much I struggle with this idea
but time after time it is proven to me -
a text when I am feeling lost,
a substitute job offer after paying bills,
the help of a neighbor with a snowblower after the very heavy snow,
the list can go on and on.
but you do need to pay attention, be open & trust!!

So as the hustle and bustle of Christmas swings into high gear,
remember to pay attention and live your life to the fullest and
be astonished and amazed!! xxx

may this dress celebrate YOU and your precious life!!

'ribbon dress' (2008) part of the collection at the Dana Hall School
"What will you do with
your one wild and precious life?"
Mary Oliver

for today I picked one of my favorite
dresses from my dressproject, 'ribbon dress'
to create the skirt I stamped
positive and inspiring quotes
on ribbons and strips of fabrics.
this was a time-consuming process, however
I loved the meditative process of
individually stamping each letter of these
words of wisdom.
this dress contains many of my favorite quotes ~
from Mary Oliver, Kiki Smith &
Thoreau, to name a few.
(a bit of a precursor to my dresscards)

this dress is part of the
Dana Hall School's art collection,
it is exhibited in their library.
I feel that it is a perfect home
for this dress,
as it emanates  positive and
affirming ideas.

I wish to share my favorite poem by Mary Oliver ~

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
