Dr. Mae Jemison

Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel in space when she served as an astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. After graduating medical school and a brief general practice, Jemison served in the Peace Corps from 1985 until 1987. In 1987 her application to become an astronaut was accepted by NASA and on September 12, 1992 she was a mission specialist aboard STS-47. In 1993 she resigned from NASA and founded a company researching the application of technology to daily life. She has appeared on television several times, including as an actress in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She is a dancer and holds nine honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and the humanities. She is the current principal of the 100 Year Starship organization.

First African-American Woman Astronaut

On June 4, 1987, Mae C. Jemison became the first African-American woman to be admitted into the NASA astronaut training program. After more than a year of training, she became the first African-American woman astronaut, earning the title of science mission specialist — a job that would make her responsible for conducting crew-related scientific experiments on the space shuttle.

When Jemison finally flew into space on September 12, 1992, with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavour on mission STS47, she became the first African-American woman in space. 

During her eight days in space, Jemison conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness on the crew and herself. In all, she spent more than 190 hours in space before returning to Earth on September 20, 1992. Following her historic flight, Jemison noted that society should recognize how much both women and members of other minority groups can contribute if given the opportunity.

day18: the treasures found in a book and the power of literature ....

In this highly 'wired' world, where we are all constantly connected to electronic devices that entertain,  occupy and assist us, one could forget about the pleasure of curling up with an old fashion book, 

but don't!!! 

Remember the wonders that a well crafted tale, of getting lost in another world created by the author and your imagination.  

Many have discovered their purpose and/or dreams and/or sense of self, between the pages of Austen, Bronte, Thoreau, Angelou, Rowling, Kerouac (to name just a few)

If you are feeling lost or adrift, trying craving out some time to read, just read. 

Also, if you can, read the book before you see the movie.  Let your imagination create the setting, costumes and characters of the story before Hollywood claims everything!

Day 2: Imagination is more important!

In honor of the passing of the wonderful Gene Wilder, I wish to share with you his beautiful rendition of 'pure imagination', and remind you to NEVER stop using your IMAGINATION!!!! Even the great Albert Einstein knew how important imagination is!! Your imagination is limitless!!! so use it, play with it, follow it and see where it takes you!!1
