what are you concentrating on today???


Concentrate all your thoughts 
upon the work at hand. 
The sun's rays do not burn 
until brought to a focus.

It is that time of year again, figuring out the finances for taxes.  
Needless to say there are so many other activities that I'd 
rather do, however today I'm concentrating my 'rays' on my books
(although I hope I don't burn them :)

where is your attention dwelling??

Last month I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop lead by Priti Robyn Ross, 'Refilling your Well', where I learned many practices and ideas about self care and mindfulness.  Our talks were filled with many thoughtful and smart maxims to remember as we live our days, and I hope to share many of them here.  

We spoke a lot about energy, and one point that we kept returning to was what you put your focus, your time, your energy on, is what is going to grow.  

So today I want you to think about ~
where are you putting your energy and attention??
Are you focusing on the positive or the negative??
what do you want to nurture and grow, your goals or your fears??

Have patience in times of transition ....

September is full of new beginnings and different situations, especially with school and classes.  So it is important to remind yourself to be patient, before getting all concerned that things are going wrong.

It is easy to feel lost and confused when things are not the way you remembered them to be or hoped they would be.  But if you can take a moment, exhale, and see how things settle, you may be very happy with the way things are.  Remember that these situations are new for everyone, and some people may be feeling nervous or apprehensive, making the atmosphere feel awkward or unpleasant.

Think back to other times when you were anxious or upset by how you thought a class was not going to be what you wanted, or an experience was not what you had hoped for.  Yet once everything settled down it turned out to be a great adventure.

It can be helpful to step back and observe before worrying and getting depressed.  However there are situations that will never feel like the best fit, even after the settling down period.  In that case, it is good try to change the situation, switch the class or change your seat if you are near a distraction.

If it is not possible to physically change the situation then see if you can change your perspective of the situation, see what you can glean from circumstance.  Can you find an aspect of the environment that you are excited about? It may be different from what you have focused on in previous years, however it may open you to new ideas and horizons.

Transitions and change can be sad, frustrating and hard, but they are a part of life and if you can stay open and positive you may be astonished at what is coming your way!! Because is many ways change is amazing!!!  love, mom

I have always felt that September has a 'new year' feeling with all its new beginnings and transitions. For many it is the start of a new school year, and everyone is changing gears from a summertime state-of-mind back to a business-as-usual demeanor. 

During these times of change it is so easy to feel overwhelmed and confused, so for today I offer us all this 'prayer' and a reminder to focus AND breathe.

may this dress remind you, bird by bird . . . .

Today I need to remember the wise words from Anne Lamott's father
 ~ 'bird by bird'.
As it happens I am prepping for 
2 shows opening in the next 7 days!! 
'Flirt",  the inaugural group show @ the Dedham Mother Brook Art Center
'the daily dress series' @ Baldwin Hill Art, Natick.
I am super excited about both shows, 
however this friday has arrived with a laundry list of 
things to do a mile long - 
so bird by bird . . .
