Auction for two 'great things' ...

This mixed-media coffee cup is acrylic on canvas with the addition of the corrugated cardboard (a coffee cup holder) and the paper from a sewing pattern.

Virginia Fitzgerald is a mixed media artist who works in sculpture, installation, fiber arts, painting, photography and collage. She works & lives in Natick, MA with her two amazing daughters in a house full of love and creativity. Her work can be found in many private collections throughout the country. Her sculpture, "dear jeff ..." is in the permanent collection at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, NYC, NY. Virginia is a champion of creativity and believes that everyone is an artist.

A creative mask auction to benefit the Kimberly & Andy Fund.

On Tuesday, August 18th, Kimberly and her husband Andy were out for their routine evening stroll near downtown Natick when a blue pickup truck jumped the curb and ran them over, driving them into a wooden fence. A piece of the wood from from the fence impaled Kimberly through the chest. In haste to flee the scene, the driver of the truck backed over Kimberly, crushing both of her legs, and took off at a high rate of speed. ...

get back into the swing of things with self acceptance!!!

“I don't know if I continue, even today, always liking myself. But what I learned to do many years ago was to forgive myself. It is very important for every human being to forgive herself or himself because if you live, you will make mistakes- it is inevitable. But once you do and you see the mistake, then you forgive yourself and say, 'Well, if I'd known better I'd have done better,' that's all. So you say to people who you think you may have injured, 'I'm sorry,' and then you say to yourself, 'I'm sorry.' If we all hold on to the mistake, we can't see our own glory in the mirror because we have the mistake between our faces and the mirror; we can't see what we're capable of being. You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one's own self. I think that young men and women are so caught by the way they see themselves. Now mind you. When a larger society sees them as unattractive, as threats, as too black or too white or too poor or too fat or too thin or too sexual or too asexual, that's rough. But you can overcome that. The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself. If we don't have that we never grow, we never learn, and sure as hell we should never teach.” 


Well you two girls are now back at school and getting into the swing of your second semester meaning I need to get back into the swing of our 100days of motherlove.  So to get us all into a proper state of mind I thought a good place to start is with these wise words from Maya Angelou, about self forgiveness and self acceptance.

Self acceptance is a wonderful and powerful place from where to live!! I believe that our society works hard to erode our sense of self and well being in many ways. Self doubt and insecurity gives others immense power over you.  These undermining principles are the basis of advertising and most marketing.  Think about most magazine publications, their success comes from selling you the idea that you are not doing something 'right' and that they can offer you a better way; a better way to look, speak, organize your home, to exercise ....  That is why there were hardly any magazines in the house when you were young and there was never a fashion magazine.  

Be aware of external messages that make you question your inner-wisdom, your true knowing and what you heart tells you.  You alone know your heart's desire and you alone can do your heart's biddings. My hope for you both is that you do not second guess yourself, and especially I pray that you don't get into the habit of constantly criticizing yourself!!

  Much of that negative inner dialogue has been handed down to you through family and environment, and for that I apologize.  But I hope that you can be aware of this internal negative thinking and reprogram it now, not years from now, which is what I am doing.  Each person is born with an inner compass that can get warped by outer forces and can lead to so much heartache and wasted energy.

So today I say to you both, that you are so wonderful!! and have so much to bring to this world!!! Please do NOT find comfort in cutting yourself down and being critical of yourselves.  Sadly the world as we know it is overflowing with critical and negative messages, coming at each one of us continually, so it is paramount that you are not also receiving these kinds of messages from yourself.  Be kind and forgiving to yourself.  Being self-critical is not a success way to motivate yourself (see day 53 if you need a reminder), it is mostly hurtful and a waste of energy.  

I say take that energy and put it into practicing self acceptance and tap into your own inner knowing and bring to the world all that you are capable of doing!!

Know that you both are amazing AF!!

day40: sometimes you need to just kick back ...


Life is all about balance. You don’t always need to be getting stuff done. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay, and absolutely necessary, to shut down, kick back, and do nothing. 


This is SO true!!
Especially in this age of omni-access, it is  is critical to make sure you create a healthy life balance. 

 Since we now all carry mini computers with us, it is very easy to be 'busy' all the time,
checking emails, checking social media, checking the most current news ...
But don't do it.

Remember the importance of doing nothing!!! 
Daydreaming, doodling, pausing, just being!!

day39: love our imperfections, embrace life

John Lennon had his imperfections but he also had some amazing ideas and inspiring insights!!
Just really listen to his song 'Imagine' and really imagine what he is saying ... it is life changing, world altering, mind opening, fearless and open-hearted!

day15: take care of your heart!!!

Take care of your heart!! 
and surround yourself with only those people who will take care for your heart as well. 
Don't make excuses for people who treat you badly, especially if they call themselves a friend!! (you know I speak from experience.)
Trust your gut, your heart. if you feel as though someone is not treating you with kindness and respect, take notice and don't make excuses!
Find the ones that love you unconditionally and support you during good times and bad.  Find your tribe!!

Day 3: bird by bird

Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report written on birds that he'd had three months to write, which was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books about birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him put his arm around my brother's shoulder, and said, "Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.Anne LamottBird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

This is the quote that has been bubbling up to the surface since I deposited you in Newark.  This quote/concept is a main touchstone for me, "bird by bird", the only way to do anything.
And I believe I need to share this quote today for both you and me!!!

Here you are starting this grand new adventure, so much to see, to learn, to do, to join and to experience and that can be so overwhelming!!! As well as being responsible for your self care, laundry, meals and time management ... Again overwhelming!!!! 

And for me, I need to tackle my long 'to-do' list that I have ignored while helping to get you to Delaware!!, happily ignored, mind you!!!  Also, I find myself in a whirl of confusion about how to parcel all the thoughts and desires I want to share with you in this project?!? so much to say ... 

In fact, at this time of the year, most people are struggling with the transition from a summer schedule to a more rigid schedule, so this is a good quote for all.  

Remember to take EVERYTHING one bird at a time! 
If you are feeling overwhelmed by a task, break it down into more manageable pieces.  If those pieces are still overwhelming, break each piece down into smaller pieces.  
Do it conscientiously, deliberately, not just think in your mind that you have broken it down (I speak from experience). 

Make a list of the smaller steps, give yourself a reward when you have finished a certain number of smaller steps, try to focus on the task at hand and not think about the larger project.   
This might sounds cliche but it does work.  
It takes practice, I know that from experience, and it is good to remind yourself daily, again I speak from experience, but it is a tried and true approach which I wanted to share with you today.



ALSO!!! you must read Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird!!! I find myself reading it at least once a year!!!
