We are how we treat each other and nothing more .... this is my religion.


I loved this song the first time I heard it and with the insanity of the leadership this week I needed to share it.  And, as happens so many times when I research different items for this blog, I learned that this song was created for the organization Newtown Kindness, an organization borne out of the loss of Sandy Hook first-grader Charlotte Bacon. The group is committed to promoting acts of kindness and encouraging children to become lifelong contributors to their communities.

I HIGHLY suggest that you listen to this song and to its words.  In this dangerous time where human rights and basic dignity is taking hits from people in positions of power and leadership, I believe it is our personal duty to be kind to each, respect each other and that our behavior, the way we act, speak and behave is a reflection of who we are!!
this is my religion!

get back into the swing of things with self acceptance!!!

“I don't know if I continue, even today, always liking myself. But what I learned to do many years ago was to forgive myself. It is very important for every human being to forgive herself or himself because if you live, you will make mistakes- it is inevitable. But once you do and you see the mistake, then you forgive yourself and say, 'Well, if I'd known better I'd have done better,' that's all. So you say to people who you think you may have injured, 'I'm sorry,' and then you say to yourself, 'I'm sorry.' If we all hold on to the mistake, we can't see our own glory in the mirror because we have the mistake between our faces and the mirror; we can't see what we're capable of being. You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one's own self. I think that young men and women are so caught by the way they see themselves. Now mind you. When a larger society sees them as unattractive, as threats, as too black or too white or too poor or too fat or too thin or too sexual or too asexual, that's rough. But you can overcome that. The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself. If we don't have that we never grow, we never learn, and sure as hell we should never teach.” 


Well you two girls are now back at school and getting into the swing of your second semester meaning I need to get back into the swing of our 100days of motherlove.  So to get us all into a proper state of mind I thought a good place to start is with these wise words from Maya Angelou, about self forgiveness and self acceptance.

Self acceptance is a wonderful and powerful place from where to live!! I believe that our society works hard to erode our sense of self and well being in many ways. Self doubt and insecurity gives others immense power over you.  These undermining principles are the basis of advertising and most marketing.  Think about most magazine publications, their success comes from selling you the idea that you are not doing something 'right' and that they can offer you a better way; a better way to look, speak, organize your home, to exercise ....  That is why there were hardly any magazines in the house when you were young and there was never a fashion magazine.  

Be aware of external messages that make you question your inner-wisdom, your true knowing and what you heart tells you.  You alone know your heart's desire and you alone can do your heart's biddings. My hope for you both is that you do not second guess yourself, and especially I pray that you don't get into the habit of constantly criticizing yourself!!

  Much of that negative inner dialogue has been handed down to you through family and environment, and for that I apologize.  But I hope that you can be aware of this internal negative thinking and reprogram it now, not years from now, which is what I am doing.  Each person is born with an inner compass that can get warped by outer forces and can lead to so much heartache and wasted energy.

So today I say to you both, that you are so wonderful!! and have so much to bring to this world!!! Please do NOT find comfort in cutting yourself down and being critical of yourselves.  Sadly the world as we know it is overflowing with critical and negative messages, coming at each one of us continually, so it is paramount that you are not also receiving these kinds of messages from yourself.  Be kind and forgiving to yourself.  Being self-critical is not a success way to motivate yourself (see day 53 if you need a reminder), it is mostly hurtful and a waste of energy.  

I say take that energy and put it into practicing self acceptance and tap into your own inner knowing and bring to the world all that you are capable of doing!!

day 87: practice kindness, we need it now more than ever!!!

Continue to be who and how you are, 
to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.”

Practicing kindness in this mean world makes your life more pleasant and you will be surprised on how people may react to your kindness.  It is a way of life that I strive to practice.  I especially focus on being kind in frustrating and annoying situations, and I swear it makes them easier!!

There is a power in choosing to react with kindness.  However I am not suggesting that you be a doormat!! there is no reason to be kind in the face of meanness, bullying or disrespect.
But I am suggesting that during the course of the day you focus on bringing more kindness, respect and patience into our mean world.  

Kindness can be found in small acts, like holding a door open or letting someone with less stuff go ahead of you in the checkout line.  Kindness can be demonstrated on the road!! In fact SHOULD be practiced on the road.  If more drivers practiced kindness and patience, I believe that traffic on a whole would move more smoothly.  How many times is a bottleneck back-up made worse by drivers vying to be next, causing a mini stand-off until one relinquishes?!?!  To me it is a joy to let people merge without them having to force their way in.

It is also SO SO  SO important to practice self kindness!!!
Quiet those inner critics who are constantly telling you that you are not enough!!
YOU ARE ENOUGH!!! 
You are amazing and wonderful just as you are!!
Berating and criticizing yourself is wasted energy.
Think about it,  does berating and belittling helps anyone do better?!?!
I thorough believe that when you approach any issue or problem with kindness you are more successful and less spent.

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar

So be kind!! be kind to yourself and to this 'mean' world. 
And let's face facts we need way more kindness in this world, 
now more than ever ,with the pending swearing-in
 of the biggest and worse bully that I know!

day50: Smile and think of Pop ...

Just stop and really think about this quote. I bet you can remember exactly those who made you feel good, loved, happy and welcomed, just as you can as easily remember those who made you feel small, excluded, bullied and sad. 

So be kind and thoughtful to all those you meet during your day. Not only because they will remember you for this behavior, but you will feel better for being that way. Trust me, I practice being kind and thoughtful to all I meet and it makes me feel good at the end of the day. It doesn't cost you anything to be nice but affect can be amazing!! 

Pop believes in treating everyone with kindness and respect. When I would visit him when at his work in downtown Chicago, we would play a game as we walked. We would look everyone that we passed in the eye and give them a smile!! That was it, just give everyone who was hustling and bustling a smile and Pop loved how people would react! Many were confused by our simple smile, some smiled back, and sadly some were suspicious of our behavior. 
No matter the response Pop loved it and I loved it. And I felt like we were starting little ripples of goodwill on the streets of downtown Chicago, and I believe everywhere could use a ripple of goodwill, don't you think?!

So try the smile game and think of Pop! love, Mom

may this dress help you to know your purpose . . . .

I stumbled upon this clip and was very touched.  I don't have a TV so I hadn't heard of this story.  But when I watched this short exchange I was moved.  Not only by the generosity of the waitress but by Ellen commitment to kindness.  Especially since the soldiers were concerned about their lunch bill because of our government's shutdown.  It just seems to highlight the absurdity of the situation when a woman who doesn't have much financial security helps the solders who are being penalized for working for an institution that were playing petty games with people's lives, saving and financial security.  And I ask what was gained or even learned by this tactic?!? It saddens me that egos and hubris seem to mean most in our government.


In fact I have seen this quote of Ellen's begin a sentence earlier:

“I work really hard at trying to see the big picture and not getting stuck in ego. I believe we’re all put on this planet for a purpose, and we all have a different purpose… When you connect with that love and that compassion, that’s when everything unfolds.” – Ellen DeGeneres 


I felt that for my daily dress inspiration that the ego part of the quote wasn't that important, but as it always happens, I now see that it is important.
